Italian MP: Not only the Kurds, but the West is also in danger! 2026-01-24 10:41:31   Melek Avcı   ANKARA - Assessing the attacks on Rojava, Italian MP Francesca Ghirra emphasized that not only the Kurds, Rojava, and the Middle East are in danger, but the West is also at risk.   While HTS and affiliated gangs, armed and supported by Turkey, have continued their attacks on Rojava since January 6, following the January 4 Paris meeting between Israel and Damascus, resistance continues both on the battlefield and in many parts of the world. As part of these attacks, gangs carried out numerous assaults on prisons and camps holding DAISH gang members, who have a history of numerous massacres and genocide in 2014, in order to empty them and recruit them into HTS ranks. HTS's attacks on Rojava, its attempts to eliminate the presence of women, and its efforts to revive DAISH cells are drawing international condemnation.    The Syrian Democratic Forces (QSD), stating that the international coalition failed to fulfill its duty to protect the camps and prisons where DAISH gangs were located, announced this with documents and moved to defense areas where people were located while Rojava was being besieged. Many countries that have reacted to the silence towards HTS, DAISH, and gangs affiliated with Turkey are calling for resistance against DAISH's efforts to revive itself and threaten the whole world, and for the protection of Rojava.    ‘Ceasefire declarations are being blatantly violated’   Beginning her remarks by stating that there is no pause for the Kurdish people and that the struggle continues, Francesca Ghirra said, "Looking at the situation in Rojava, the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria has been experimenting with a progressive and multicultural model of self-government for over a decade. However, the situation has rapidly evolved into a military offensive that goes far beyond a local military conflict. The beginning of 2026 started with fierce clashes linked to the violation of the agreement signed on March 10, 2025, between the interim government leadership and the QSD command. Following the occupation of Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor, and Tabqa, the attacks continue on several fronts, and statements regarding the ceasefire are being blatantly violated."    'A cause for concern for the whole world'   Noting that these attacks are part of a broader policy rather than purely military, Francesca Ghirra said, "There is a growing sense that these attacks are part of a broader policy targeting the political and social gains of the Kurdish people. What is alarming is that all of this is happening with the support of Turkey and the United States. Yet these countries seemed interested in contributing to the peace process initiated by Abdullah Öcalan. The situation is extremely alarming, not only for the Kurds, Rojava, and the entire Middle East, but also for the entire Western world."   ‘The siege of Kobanê is a bad sign’   Francesca Ghirra, who says that leaving DAISH cells under HTS control poses a major threat, adds, “We are well aware of how decisive the Kurds’ efforts have been in stopping Daesh and subsequently defeating it. And today, we are witnessing the possibility of prisons and camps holding thousands of ISIS fighters and their families falling under the control of the Syrian government. This could spell the end of one of the main obstacles to jihadists reorganizing, built over years by the SDF with the support of the International Coalition. This is a transition fraught with risks that threaten not only northeastern Syria, but the entire region and even the West. The fact that Kobanê is under siege again is truly a bad sign," he said.    ‘We made calls to the Meloni Government but received no response’   “I believe there will be a clear condemnation of what is happening in Rojava and that international law and rules will be respected,” said Francesca Ghirra, describing her efforts in Europe: “The deafening silence of the European Union is truly incomprehensible. As Italian parliamentarians, we made several calls to the Meloni Government, demanding that it halt the military escalation at the European Union and international levels, ensure respect for the ceasefire, and initiate efforts to ensure the security of ISIS prisons and camps. Unfortunately, however, there has been no response so far. I think the situation is really very serious, and I trust that the international community will intervene as soon as possible. All of this cannot be allowed to happen amid the silence of international organizations and European states. These new systematic human rights violations are unacceptable, and it is absurd to endorse the role of the militias used by the government, especially in the Kobanê region. We know very well that these groups are armed groups subject to international sanctions regimes for war crimes they committed in the past against the Kurdish people in Afrin, the Alawite community on the coast, and the Druze community in the south of the country. How can these militias now be officially integrated into the Syrian army?"   ‘Rojava cannot be abandoned’   Regarding the release of DAISH prisoners and the US sending these gangs to Iraq under the guise of so-called deportation, Francesca Ghirra said that Europe is underestimating this threat. Francesca Ghirra said, “Unfortunately, I think there is a great underestimation of what could happen: Rojava cannot be abandoned. Europe must prevent jihadist militias from destroying Kurdish autonomy, not only to protect the Kurdish people, but also to honestly consider the risks facing the entire continent."    'A firm stance must be taken'   While Europe has for years pursued harsh policies towards refugees fleeing war, Francesca Ghirra said of this war, which will again cause a wave of migration, "This is one of the most serious and worrying issues of our time. Witnessing intense policies against poor migrants fleeing hunger and war, while at the same time contributing to destabilizing new regions of the world, forcing people from these regions to flee, is an unacceptable contradiction. I really expect European governments to take a firm stance against the madness of Trump and the Syrian government."
